Climbing the stairs so as not to wake anyone from the juddering noise of the barely operative lift, he found a British sergeant fully uniformed and waiting for him in a chair outside his door. Upon seeing him, the soldier, who had been dozing, stumbled heavily to his feet, saluted, then handed him an envelope.

The message inside, signed by a Major Vance Clifford, RAF, was two lines long, penned in a hasty-looking scrawl.

. . . was found hanged inside his cell in D Block at 13:00 hours this morning, July 14. Because of the prisoner’s rank, the body will be shipped back to his former post of command.
